What is ‘Yeast’?
It’s a playful way of stating that you are going to up the stakes. Like most raises, it will likely come with a great degree of confidence.
One of the many lively slang terms used by experienced players, it doesn’t truly serve any great purpose or add much to the game outside of a bit of playful language.
If not used by players, then commentators who speak over televised games will likely use it to keep listeners and viewers engaged. To just state that a player has raised could get a little dry after a while, especially in longer casino game matches.
The name comes from the organism and baking ingredient that is used to raise bread and other delicious goods. While some dough may not rise, once yeast has been added, it certainly will. There’s a clear mental image that comes with the word, and it’s made common knowledge through school cooking classes that the ingredient is essential to bringing baked items to life.
While the term is used by experienced players, there’s no shame in simply saying that you just want to raise. Usable by anyone, the term is totally optional. However, should you work in a casino, then it’s essential that you speak fluent poker slang. Failure to know a widely known and well-accepted word will speak poorly of you as a worker, and perhaps even damage the reputation of the house. High rolling players will only want to work with the very best, and knowing the terminology inside and out is utterly essential for anyone wanting to make a career for themselves at a land-based casino.
