What is the Worst of It?
When a casino player refers to having the ‘worst of it’, the ‘it’ they are referring to is luck. Players talk about the ‘best of it’ and the ‘worst of it’ in terms of the hands they are dealt and the chances they get at the table. A player who bets against the worst of it is taking a long shot and has a slim chance of success, but they opt to take the risk anyway.
Worst of It Explained
At the start of a game of poker, players are dealt cards and they must decide whether to play the hand or fold it. Hands can also be folded at any later turn in the game. When a player drops out of a game, they hand back their cards and forfeit any stake they already have in the pot. Players usually drop out because they start with a weak hand, or because they realise later in the game that the hand will not be improved. Sometimes players will fold with a good hand, because another player has raised the stakes high and made the bet a risky one.
If a player refers to having the ‘worst of it’, they mean that their hand was the weakest or that they had poor luck in the game. However, players with the ‘worst of it’ have chosen to try their luck and play for the pot, rather than folding it. A hand that is technically the worst in the game can still win the pot, if the player can successfully bluff and lead the rest of the table into leaving the game early. The opposite to ‘worst of it’ is ‘best of it’ – having the best luck of the night, or picking up the best hand at the table.
