World Series of Poker (WSOP)

What is the World Series of Poker?

The World Series of Poker refers to a major poker event that takes place at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas. A ‘high stakes‘ game, it is televised and considered one of the biggest events on the poker calendar. Players from all over the world come to compete as it is an event of such high regard.

The World Series of Poker explained

Founded in 1970 by Lester Ben “Benny” Binion, a gambling icon and notorious mobster, the tournament originally consisted of a handful of highly revered players who would play a game with a set time limit.

Instantly a popular event, it quickly grew in size, which resulted in the ‘buy in‘ price of $10,000. As a result of such a fee, the main ‘pot‘ is valued in the millions. But it’s not the only prize that comes with winning such a prestigious tournament. Along with the prize money comes a bracelet which is viewed as one of the most desirable items that a poker player can own. The games are many, but most of them consist of variations on Texas Hold ‘Em.

The event eventually became so popular that it expanded to Europe, as well as other locations. The European tournament has changed cities numerous times for various reasons. Also, the continent truly lacks anywhere as open and synonymous with gambling as Las Vegas.

Throughout its long history, the World Series of Poker has seen record breakers come and go. Some of the more notable records include:

  • Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari winning the largest pot of $21,107,812
  • Phillip Jerome Hellmuth, Jr. winning the most bracelets – 14
  • Jack Ury winning oldest event participant at the impressive age of 97
  • Annette Obrestad winning youngest bracelet winner at the age of 18

Still going strong, the event continues to attract large crowds and viewing figures as it’s one of the best events to see the superstars of the sport in one room together.
