What is ‘Virgin’?
In a game of lotto, the term virgin is used to describe specific combinations of numbers that have never before been drawn. Due to the sheer amount of lotto games now played on a daily or weekly basis across the globe, for a number sequence to be virgin is becoming increasingly rare.
Virgin is a term used in conjunction with lotto to refer to a particular sequence of numbers that has never been drawn in that combination before. Because of the rising number of lotto games and institutions that offer lotto, it is now becoming more and more rare for a specific number draw to be called virgin.
The term is typically used to refer to the games played daily; they use fewer numbers and therefore have far fewer number sequences that have never been drawn. Many combinations, therefore, do not warrant the term virgin and it is rare to get one such instance.
The etymology of the word virgin points to the state of never having completed an action, or the state of being without something. The use of the word virgin as a colloquial lotto term is therefore somewhat unusual, but the definition of the word in a lotto context makes perfect sense. If a particular number combination is virgin, it fits perfectly with the etymology of the word linking to a state of being without regularity and never having been drawn.
Virgin would be used in the context of lotto is as follows: the machine draws a 3, 9, 17, 24, and 38. These numbers have all been drawn in this specific combination before. An analysis of this particular lotto draw might say that the numbers 13, 15, 22, and 46 are all the most common numbers to also have been drawn in combination with the other five numbers. However, it is known that this sequence has never been completed with the 25-ball before. Now, however, this ball is drawn for the first time with this order of numbers. This exact sequence will be called virgin because that specific lotto provider has never drawn it before. Now that it has been drawn, however, it will never be called ‘Virgin’ again. The number of ‘Virgin’ draws is therefore gradually depleting.
