What does ‘Toke’ Mean?
A ‘toke’ or ‘toking’ is a phrase used to mean a tip to the dealer in a casino for their services within the game. The term is apparently derived from the phrase ‘token of appreciation’.
In most casino games there is a dealer who is working at a game table, providing services to keep the game going for all the players. As most dealers only earn minimum wage, receiving ‘tokes’ throughout the day can be extremely important to them. It’s also great to say thank you to them for their services, as well as making sure you and your bets are well looked after at the gaming table.
If you’d like to give the dealer a ‘toke’ within a game, you can do this by giving them your chips. You may want to do this after you’ve won a nice pay-out. The dealer will then call out ‘tokes for the dealer’, to make any floor supervisors or managers aware of what’s going on and to make sure it’s not mistaken for stealin. The dealer will then add the ‘tokes’ received into a toke box and tap the table, before returning to the game.
In the game of blackjack, you can also put a ‘toke’ for the dealer while playing a game and add the dealer to the game to win their own money. This can be done differently. In effect, you are adding a bet to the game for the dealer, so the dealer can double the ‘toke’ if your hand wins. If the dealer beats the player, the bet is lost and added back to the casino’s takings. This type of ‘toke’ can be no more than 10% of the table’s maximum bet. The dealer will shout out ‘dealer in the game’ in this circumstance: again, this is to make any floor managers aware of what is occurring at the table.
Most casinos will add ‘tokes’ together and split it between all the dealers’ payslips.
