What is ‘Stickman’?
Stickman refers to the casino member of staff who is found at the craps table. While at the craps table, a stickman’s job is to call out the dice rolls so that everyone at the table is aware of the result of the previous roll. Knowing the result of the previous roll is essential for everyone at the table, so they can tell whether or not they have won a payout. The term stickman simply comes from the stick that the stickman uses to return the dice to the shooter.
As well as calling out the result of the rolls and returning the dice, a stickman is responsible for placing and paying out on all the proposition betsboxman who is found at the centre of the table at the top; their job is simply to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Either side of the boxman are two dealers. The dealer’s job is simply to handle the bets that come their way, the bets placed are either pass and don’t pass as well as come and don’t come. The stickman will also be found in the centre of the table but at the side. All of the staff report to the pit boss. As craps is a notoriously lively game, the stickman, along with the other staff members, can find themselves on the receiving end of abuse from some gamblers. In this case, a pit boss will step in to protect the staff and resolve any disputes.
Craps players who want to place a proposition bet will give their wager to the stickman. Experienced craps players recommend getting their attention first before players throw their chips in. By getting their attention, players are ensuring the stickman knows whose bet is whose. Not only does it speed up the process of the game but it keeps the stickman on the player’s side and ensures that they will be well treated should they win a payout. Seeing as the stickman makes a decision not only on who gets paid, but when they get paid, it is vital that they are clear over who is placing which bet.
