Splash Around

What is ‘Splash Around’?

Splash around is a poker term that is used to describe a player who is playing more loosely than they should be. Experienced poker players tend to be more disciplined and have a good reading of the game and their opponents, so if they suspect one of their opponents is splashing around, they will know that they can take advantage of them. If a player starts to splash around at the poker table, it usually results in them losing their money fairly quickly. Some players, however, will splash around for a couple of hands before playing more conservatively in an attempt to throw their opponents off.

‘Splash Around’ Explained

Ultimately, splashing around in poker is not considered to be a good idea unless players incorporate it into their tactics. If, for example, a player is at a cash game at a casino and is folding nearly every hand apart from huge pocket pairs such as a pair of aces, kings or queens, they are likely to be viewed by their opponents as a ‘tight‘ player. This is the opposite of someone who splashes around because they have a very conservative approach to the game. While this approach may seem less risky, more experienced players may still be able to take advantage simply because they have figured out that the player is ‘tight’ and can use their experience by adopting an aggressive approach with them once the blinds start to get bigger.

On the other end of the spectrum are the loose and aggressive players, opponents will see a player as being ‘loose’ if they play every hand they are dealt and start to splash around. Professionals and experienced casino players know that how they are perceived by their opponents is massively important if they still want to be involved in the game’s final stages.

Successful players tend to mix things up a little, for instance, they may spend an hour at the table only playing big hands in order to give the impression that they are a ‘tight’ player. After an hour has passed they may decide to splash around to try and confuse their opponents. Alternatively, they may start loosely and adopt a more conservative style later in the game.
