Smooth Call

What is ‘Smooth Call’?

Smooth call is a poker term that is used to describe a player who calls when they would normally be expected to raise. The move is quite common with players who adopt a conservative approach at the poker table. Alternatively, a smooth call could be used to try and entice further bets from a player’s opponents. Depending on the player’s style of play, a smooth call can be used to either minimise risk or it can be used to allow the player to potentially play more aggressively in the later rounds of the hand.

‘Smooth Call’ Explained

Most of the time, a smooth call will be used by a player who wants to get more money out of their opponents. By choosing to ‘sit’ on their hand rather than bet big or go all in, they are presenting the illusion that their hand is not as good as it actually is. If the player then goes for the smooth call by simply matching all the previous bets, they lessen the risk of having their fellow players fold.

If the player has a big hand that has a good chance of winning them a lot of chips, the last thing they want to see is their fellow players folding early. The smooth call allows them to adopt what may appear to be a conservative approach, which may convince their fellow players with middling hands to stay in the hand just to see what happens. The more bets the player can get out of his opponents with a smooth call, the better. Then when it comes to the business end of the hand, the player can go more aggressive if they choose. Ultimately, a smooth call is all about ensuring that a player doesn’t waste a hand that could put them in a very good position on the table.
