What is ‘Raquel Welch’?
‘Raquel Welch’ is poker slang which refers to a hand of 3-8, either as a suited pair or an offsuit combination. The hand is named after American actor and singer Raquel Welch, a famous personality who is said to give both her age and her measurements as 38 or 3-8, and whose name, therefore, has been adopted to describe this hand.
‘Raquel Welch’ Explained
In poker, the ‘Raquel Welch’ is a poker hand which holds the 3 and the 8 in any suit combination. If a player says that they have ‘Rachel Welch’, they mean that their two cards dealt at the opener are 3-8. The phrase belongs to Hold’Em and stud poker where the player starts with two cards and has the option to better these two cards later in the game.
The reason for the nickname is unclear. Some sources say that the name comes from the Hollywood star’s impressive measurements; Ms Welch was very well known for her curvy figure. Others say that the nickname comes from the 76-year-old starlet’s habit of giving her age as 38. Either way, the nickname has stuck and the 3-8 hand is affectionately known as Raquel Welch as a result.
The other common nickname for this hand is the ‘Most Feared Hand in Hold’Em’. This is a facetious nickname because the hand is one of the worst possible in the game, and is only slightly better than the dreaded 7-2 opener in terms of its chances of success. Players will often fold on drawing the 3-8 without trying to make anything of it. However, a player might go in on the 3-8 if it lands as a suited set because there is always the chance of a flush to be pulled from the game.
