What is a ‘Playthrough’?

A playthrough is a minimum betting requirement usually attached to a bonus which are offered by many online casinos.

Online casinos offer a number of different bonuses to players including sign-up bonuses, reload bonuses and player recruitment bonuses. All of these bonuses will have a playthrough requirement attached to them before the bonus is paid.

The terms of the playthrough requirement are often hidden in the small print so always ensure you are aware of what is required before you sign up with a casino. Many playthrough requirements can be onerous on the player and even require that 50 or more bets be placed before the bonus is paid.

‘Playthrough’ Explained

If there is one area of online gaming that gets more bad press than any other it is the playthrough requirement. Many players don’t even know playthrough requirements exist and get annoyed when their bonus hasn’t been paid. To avoid confusion, always check the small print of your sign-up bonus for the playthrough requirement.

Example: You may have to deposit a minimum of $125 (£100) and bet a minimum of 20 times to get your cash bonus of $125 (£100). (The bonus and deposit amount will vary will from casino to casino.)

Some online casinos offer an upfront bonus where you deposit $125 (£100) and the casino pays you another $125 (£100) to play with. The total in your account is now $250 (£200), but there will be a playthrough requirement attached to the bonus.

Example: In this case, it may be that you must wager at least 20 times the bonus before you can cash out. That means you would have to make at least $5,000 (£4,000) of bets before you can withdraw the $125 (£100) from your account.

Another variation of this type of playthrough would be a requirement that only the bonus portion has to be bet before you can withdraw the bonus.

Example: You deposit $125 (£100) to get a $125 (£100) bonus, you now have to bet $125 (£100) 20 times before you can withdraw the bonus portion. This requires that you place $2,500 (£2,000) of bets before the bonus can be withdrawn.

Another thing to check when you sign up with an online casino is which games can be played as part of the playthrough. All casinos limit the types of games that qualify as playthrough games. Some casinos will limit playthrough games to roulette and slots, excluding blackjack and poker. Others include blackjack but stipulate a higher playthrough requirement.

The most important thing to stress before signing up for an online casino is to read the terms and conditions of the playthrough requirement. This can save you a lot of stress and confusion in the long run.
