What are ‘Outside Numbers’?
The term ‘outside numbers’ is most commonly encountered in the world of craps and refers to a certain group of numbers (4, 5, 9 and 10). The exact type of bet that a player can place on these numbers will be determined by the Point number, among other factors. Players will often place a bet on outside numbers using slang terminology, which any craps dealer will automatically understand.
‘Outside Numbers’ Explained
In a casino craps tables are split up into various sections and numbers. The numbers on the table can be divided into inside numbers (5, 6, 8 and 9) and outside numbers (4, 5, 9 and 10). Whether the 9 and the 5 play as inside numbers or outside numbers depends on what is happening in the game. There are various types of bets that a player can make, and bets on inside numbers are considered wiser than bets on outside numbers. Simply put, many feel that outside numbers are “loser” bets and that the odds of making money from betting on these numbers are much lower than the odds of making money from betting on inside numbers.
Regular craps players who wish to place a bet on the outside numbers of the table will often simply call out something along the lines of “40 dollars outside”. Upon hearing this, the dealer will know that the player wishes to bet 40 dollars on the outside numbers. This bet is spread out across the four numbers, and so the player will be betting 10 dollars on the 4, 10 dollars on the 5, 10 dollars on the 9, and 10 dollars on the 10. However, things can change depending on the Point. Say the Point was 5, then this number is already covered, and so if a player was to place a bet on the outside numbers, then their bet would only be placed on the numbers 4, 9 and 10.
