Open Pair

What is an Open Pair?

There are many different variations of poker games, but this term comes into play when playing stud poker, relating to a pair of cards which are visible to all players. However, it is worth bearing in mind the different versions of stud poker. For some stud poker rules, the betting restrictions change when there is an open pair involved. An open pair can be amongst the community cards or in the visible section of an individual participant’s hand. It’s sometimes also known as an ‘exposed pair’. Cards like this are obviously always shown face up. Again, you can see this come into play in both land-based and online casinos that provide poker.

Open Pair Explained

Let’s say that you’ve decided upon playing stud poker in a casino. You join the table, place your bets and have your hand dealt. Community cards are dealt into the centre of the table and you see two cards of 10 value. These would then be referred to as an open pair. You can utilise these in your dealt hand, if they fit into it, or you can let them slide by.

There isn’t a rule which forces you into using the open pair. However, it’s worth knowing what the term relates to should it ever be used in a game you’re playing. Obviously, because it’s an ‘open’ pair of cards, any player can make use of them. It’s true that you won’t know which cards are going to be dealt into the centre of the table. And furthermore, not all of them will be dealt face up. So, therefore, it can be a gamble to decide which cards are already available for you to use and which cards are currently face down. It is up to the player to determine whether the open pair can help them find a winning hand.
