What are ‘Odds Off’?
In a game of craps players can turn their odds off or on. If they have put money on the shooter rolling an odds bet, such as rolling a six or eight at odds of 6-5, but get a bad feeling, they can turn to the stick man and say “take the odds down”. He will remove the bet for you, or simply turn the bet off for that throw.
‘Odds Off’ Explained
At the beginning of the game – on the come out roll – the following bets are off: odds on, come bets, place bets and buy bets. Hard bets are on in Las Vegas and off in Atlantic City. After the come out roll, the table opens up and all bets are on.
The come out roll establishes the point. The point numbers are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. A player can then place an odds bet on the shooter throwing one of the point numbers. For example, a player can place a chip on the number 4 at odds of 2/1. That bet is on until either the shooter rolls a 7 or until the player decides to call the bet off.
A player can temporarily call odds off if, for example, he has a bad feeling about the throw and then back on when he feels more positive about it. That is the main reason people would call odds off. There is no particular strategy to it. Wizard of Odds state a player should never call odds off. Odds off is the only bet on the table with no house edge.
