What is ‘MegaMillions’?
US MegaMillions is a world-renowned lottery jackpot game. It was first launched on 31st August 1996 and has grown to become a multi-state mega lotto. Tickets for the draw cost a mere $1 and involve choosing six numbers to play with. The standard jackpot starts at $15 million, but with millions of people playing, they often roll to higher levels. In fact, some of the biggest wins over the years were jackpots of $656 million, $648 million and $536 million.
It costs $1 to buy a MegaMillions ticket and you can pick six numbers from two different pools of numbers. That means five different numbers from 1 to 75, plus one number from 1 to 15. Or, you can select an Easy Pick which randomly chooses your numbers for you.
The US MegaMillions lotto draw takes place every Tuesday and Friday at 11pm (10pm Eastern Time, 9pm Central Time). If you match all six numbers on your ticket, then you’ve won the jackpot.
The jackpot prize always starts at $15 million, but it grows by at least $5 million per draw each time the jackpot rolls.
Most states also offer a Megaplier option that can increase non-jackpot prizes by two, three, four or even five times. This costs an additional $1 per play. For example, if you buy the Megaplier option, any non-jackpot prize that you win on a Mega Millions play is multiplied by the Megaplier number that’s drawn.
So if you win a $1 million prize and the Megaplier number drawn is a 5, your prize winnings increase to $5million. This extra feature can make the lotto draw even more exciting.
If you’re lucky enough to win a Mega Millions jackpot, you can choose to receive your winning as a one-time cash option or an annual payout, where each payment is 5% larger than the previous one. This can help provide a more manageable way of dealing with your winnings.
