What are ‘Machines’?
In the casino, ‘machines’ are the electronic games which gamblers can play, these could be slot game machines, video poker machines, rapid roulette machines or any other variation on a common casino game. Many modern machines are electronic games, but there are still many manually-activated machines, such as the old-style fruit machines, in play today.
Casinos and bookmaker shops have plenty of different games for players and many will have a set of gaming machines available. These gaming machines are usually coin-activated, like an arcade video game, but they can pay out to winners as well as accepting money for play. Gambling machines have been around for many years, with the most enduring and popular being the ‘fruit machine’ or slot game. Players press a button or pull a lever to spin the game’s reels and the machine pays out for matching combinations. These machines are still popular today, although today’s slots games are usually digital machines with video game features.
Other machines which use the video game style are poker machines and blackjack machines. These simulate a form of draw game where the player aims to make a winning hand and is paid for those wins at a scale determined by the game’s paytable. Video poker is one of the most popular modern gaming machines. Other electronic game machines include rapid roulette, which is an individual or multiplayer machine with a built-in roulette wheel, or a random number generator.
Machines can cut casino costs as they do not need a dealer to facilitate play and they also allow players to make many more decisions per hour. Usually, machines will also have a higher house edge to account for the different game features and enhanced odds, such as bonus rounds and multipliers. As a result, slots and other gaming machines are extremely common in casinos and contribute a great deal to overall revenues.
