What is ‘Jacks or Better (JoB)’?
Jacks or Better (JoB) is a popular video poker machine found in online and land based casinos. After the player has placed his bet, the computer will deal the player five cards and he has to decide which ones he wants to keep and which ones he wants to lose. Each card he discards is replaced by another. There are nine winning combinations. Getting a pair of jacks or higher wins over every other combination.
‘Jacks or Better’ explained
Before playing Jacks or Better, a player should have a good understanding of the various winning combinations so he knows which cards to hold on to and which to exchange. Winning combinations include, in descending order, royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, or Jacks or Better.
Once a player understands the winning combinations, he can start applying a strategy. Firstly, a player needs to know how to bet properly. While there are nine winning combinations, there is a 0.54% probability a player will receive a non-winning hand. In this respect, he should bet a small amount each time to give himself the chance to cover his losses.
Secondly, a player needs to develop an understanding of which cards to exchange on a hand. Quite simply, a player should always look for the best combination with the highest probability of winning. For example, if a player has a three of clubs, a five of clubs, a jack of clubs, a queen of clubs and three of hearts, he has the possibility of getting three winning hands. He already has a pair of threes, but he has the chance to get a four to the flush, or a pair of the jack or queen. He only needs to get one more card for a four to flush, which would pay the highest, so the best strategy would be to exchange the three of hearts.
