Guts

What is Guts?

Guts is a card game similar in nature to poker. Players bet in rounds on the cards they are dealt, with the ultimate winner taking the pot. However, players enter a showdown after every deal and betting round, with play continuing until all but one player opts out. There are several variations of Guts, including ranking 2-3 hands above A-A hands or requiring a single player losing to front the whole pot. The game can be based on 2, 3 or 4 card hands, which are usually ranked according to standard poker rules.

Guts Explained

The card game Guts is very similar to poker, using the same card value rankings and a similar style of play. Players bet on the cards they are dealt in a series of rounds, and each hand is ranked against those which remain in at the showdown. Unlike poker, there is a showdown for the pot after each betting round, and fresh cards are dealt after each turn. Players can opt ‘in’ or ‘out’ on each hand, and must bet accordingly.

The idea is for one player to have the guts to stay in the game, even once the stakes have been raised to a huge amount, and for that player to become the last one standing on any particular hand. Pots can roll over if no player wins them – which they frequently do, especially when dummy hands are in play. Players who lose a showdown are usually required to contribute the value of the pot they just lost, or some share of it, and the round only ends when one player remains in and scoops the whole pot.

The rankings for Guts hands are similar to poker, with value assigned in the same manner. In two card Guts games, flushes and straight do not apply. Some versions deal three, or even four cards per hand. There might also be a stud deal, or a community card, rather than a pocket hand. Casino Guts might include a dummy hand or a dealer hand, which any hand remaining in needs to beat to win the pot.
