What is a Gaming Table?
A gaming table is a piece of casino equipment used to play the various games on offer. Gaming tables are usually designed for one specific game, such as poker, roulette or blackjack. The table is marked up with the different game options and bets, and all gameplay takes place on or around the table. Players can place chips on the table when they wish to make a bet, and they may also use the table to roll the dice or play their cards.
Gaming Table Explained
Traditional casino games are played on or around gaming tables, rather than at electronic gaming terminals or through a computer. These gaming tables are pieces of furniture which resemble a normal table, but which have a material top (usually felt) which is marked with the symbols, spaces and numbers needed to play the game.
Gaming tables vary in size and shape. Roulette and craps tables are long and rectangular, while blackjack tables are small and semi-circular. Poker tables tend to be round. Players taking part in the game are usually seated around the gaming table. However, in roulette and especially craps, standing might be more practical for players.
Gaming tables are usually marked in a specific way, relating to the game they are used in. In roulette, the table has a numbered grid representing the numbers on the roulette wheel, with additional squares for the group bets. Craps is similar, with all the types of bet laid out in a grid form. In poker and blackjack, the tables are often marked with blank squares where the cards will be dealt, and with spaces for the main bet and any side bets. Tables might also be branded with the casino’s logo.
Most gaming tables are topped with felt, which is often colored green or red. The color is a design choice, but the felt or baize material is important to the games. It is smooth enough that cards slide over it without catching and flipping over, but rough enough that cards and chips won’t slip when placed.
