What are Gambling Strategies?
‘Gambling strategies’ are calculated systems used by gamblers in order to maximize their potential winnings. Players often use gambling strategies in an attempt to beat the house and minimize or remove any house edge that exists in the game. Most strategies use the rules of the game to the player’s advantage, though the term might also apply to dishonest or prohibited methods employed by some gamblers which may either be illegal or against house rules.
Gambling Strategies Explained
If a gambler refers to their ‘gambling strategies’ or ‘betting strategies’, they are referring to systematic betting processes used to try and gain an advantage over the house. Betting strategies can be very simple or extremely complicated. For example, players might adopt a system where they reduce their bet after a win and raise it after a loss, or they might adjust their bet size according to the size of their chip stack.
Mathematicians and statisticians will often devise clever betting strategies that consider the long term outcome for a player, and try to maximize what that player could win from a series of bets. While betting systems can sometimes reduce the house edge and improve the player’s chances, they may also simply be wrong, misinterpreted or still relying on luck. Fixed odds casino games are, after all, mathematically weighted in the casino’s favor.
Sometimes gambling strategies and systems are ruled as illegal or seen as dishonest. A player found using a banned betting system or using strategic betting alongside an advantage play technique might be asked to leave the casino and could even face criminal charges.
Players who use advantage play techniques, such as card counting or bet sorting, often use betting strategies to mask their actions. A player using advantage play can be easily identified if they only raise their bet when they know a good card is coming, so the player needs to mix up their bets and deflect attention.
But strategies in card games like poker, which pit the player against other players, do work, and indeed are integral to success in the game.
Similarly, gambling in sports betting can be profitable some some, if they do lots of research and have good knowledge, or partake in strategies including arbitrage betting and matched betting opportunities.
