False Cut

What is ‘False Cut’?

‘False cut’ is a term usually associated with magic tricks, as it is a form of card manipulation. The idea of a false cut is to make everyone else believe that the deck has been cut, when in fact it hasn’t. One of the most popular types of false cuts ins the ‘gambler’s false cut’, which takes its inspiration from card sharks or ‘cardsharps’ of old. Since false cuts are a type of card manipulation, they are outlawed in casinos and whenever a player is asked to cut the cards at a table game, it will be overseen by a dealer.

‘False Cut’ Explained

A false cut will only be used in card games if the player is intending to cheat. Most experienced gamblers who know how to perform a false cut will not do so in a casino because they know that it would not only get them escorted from the table, but potentially banned from the casino altogether. If someone is even suspected of basic card manipulation, security will be informed immediately and the player will be asked to leave the table.

The aim of a basic false cut is to appear as if it is a real cut but, crucially, the deck will be left in the same order as when the cut began. There are more involved and sophisticated versions of a false cut, which have been designed to make specific changes to the order of the deck. These versions are usually dynamic, so if a player happens to be in a game where they need the ace of spades to appear at a certain time, they will be able to place the card exactly where they want it. This is all done while appearing to be a normal, straightforward cut, which is why only the most experienced practitioners of card manipulation would be capable of attempting it.

To perform a false cut, the player might employ tactics such as misdirection where they ensure their fellow players’ attention (along with the dealer) is focused elsewhere while they complete the false cuts. If they’re particularly skilled, they might be able to conceal the false cut using complex moves that appear to be perfectly natural. Ultimately, a player is only going to perform a false cut if they plan on getting something out of the game by employing underhand tactics, so the key for fellow players is to stay focused on the deck of cards at all times.
