What is ‘Edge’
The edge is a term used in the card game of poker which describes a certain player having a clear and obvious advantage over another opposition player.
Rather than simply just being called “edge”, it is often referred to in the context of “having the edge over someone” if a player has a clearly advantageous position over an opposition player.
“Having the edge” is a term frequently used whilst playing poker to describe a particular player’s advantage over their opposition. To be described as “having the edge” is one of the best things you can be described as having whilst playing poker as it means you are in a very advantageous position in comparison to those around you. For example, if player A decides that they believe they have a hand which is likely of winning them the pot, they may decide to go all in.
Player B then decides to match player A and also goes all in, however when the cards are revealed it is clear that player A has won as whichever hand player A has is much, much better than player B’s and therefore player A takes the pot.
Player C then may point out that “player A had the edge there” as they clearly won. Player A may happen to be a very good poker player and when they enter tournaments could often be described as “having the edge.” To “have the edge” in poker takes much practise at playing the game and is usually achieved through experience of playing the game.
Some key tips to “gain the edge” in poker include taking notes during games of key stats and events and also analysing your games after they’ve taken place to see what you may be able to improve on in the future.
