What is a Discard Button?
A discard button appears in some online card games, such as video poker. It is used by the player to indicate that they wish to discard some of the cards in their hands. It appears most often in five-card draw games, where players select some cards to remove from their hand in order to draw more and attempt to better that hand.
Discard Button Explained
Video poker is a popular twist on traditional poker. Instead of playing against a table of opponents, the player goes up against the strength of their own hand in a five-card draw game which usually has just one drawing hand. Players need to find a qualifying hand – usually a pair of jacks or better – in order to win that hand. The better their hand ranks against the standard poker payout table, the more they win back on their wager.
In video poker, players usually select which cards they wish to hold onto. They click the cards they want to play, and then select the hold button. This keeps the chosen cards on the screen and gets rid of the remaining cards, exchanging them for new ones in a random draw.
However, some forms of the game have a discard button instead. Players select the cards they do not wish to keep, and click this discard button to remove them. These discarded cards are then replaced with fresh ones at random.
Whether an electronic card game uses a discard button or a hold button is entirely up to the operator. Players should always be sure to check which button a game uses before taking any action. A discard button does exactly the opposite to a hold button! Mixing them up could leave a player throwing away great cards, or hanging onto terrible ones.
