Deal Me In

What is Deal Me In?

In poker ‘deal me in’ is a request from the player to be included in the next round. It might be said by someone who is joining the game to signify they are ready to start, or by a player who needs to leave the table for a moment but still wants to be included in the hand. Not all casinos will comply with a request to ‘deal me in’ – some house rules state that only players at the table can receive cards.

Deal Me In Explained

In a poker game, being present at the table with chips available to play is a clear indication that a player wishes to receive cards in the next deal! Once a player enters a game in a casino, they are usually not permitted to skip hands and must be dealt to every turn – only after the initial deal and bet can they fold and drop out. Home games are more casual, and players can usually miss occasional hands if they wish.

When a player says to the dealer ‘deal me in’, they are indicating that they want cards in the next hand. As stated, being dealt in is implied by being present – so the phrase tends to be used only by players who have just joined the game, and by players who are leaving the table temporarily.

Leaving the table during a poker game is not always permitted, and players who are present are expected to be dealt a hand each round. However, sometimes a player needs to get more cash, grab a drink or use the bathroom – and if they don’t want to miss any action, they will call to be dealt in as they leave. Alternatively, a player could ask the dealer to ‘deal me out’ – meaning they will be away for a hand or more, and should be skipped until they return.
