What is a ‘Corner Bet’?
‘Corner Bet’ is a term associated with roulette and specifically refers to a type of bet roulette players can make. Players can place a corner bet by positioning their chips at the corner of four numbers, usually in the middle, making sure that part of the chips are on each number so that the dealer knows they have placed a corner bet. Casinos will pay out 8-1 for any winning corner bet which makes corner bets a popular choice with experienced roulette players.
‘Corner Bet’ Explained
A corner bet (sometimes referred to as a quad bet or a straight bet) allows players to cover more squares on the table which heightens their chance of winning. Although it pays out less than a straight bet, players are four times as likely to win with a corner bet. An example of a corner bet would be placing the chips in the cross section of the table where the numbers 4,5,7 and 8 are located. This is a straightforward corner bet, if the ball lands on any of those numbers, the player will win a payout of 8-1.
One of the most popular corner bet strategies is called the ‘five quad’. This is a simple strategy where players will place their chips in five different cross sections of four numbers which will cover twenty numbers in total. To complete the strategy they will place a chip on a single number (a straight bet), making sure that their straight bet isn’t one of the numbers covered by their other chips. This means that the player has covered twenty-one numbers in total. With so many numbers covered, if the player hasn’t wagered too much as to affect their winnings, they stand a good chance of winning a payout of at-least 8/1.
When placing a corner bet, it’s good to remember that the casino still has an advantage over the player (a ‘house edge’), this comes from the amount the casino pays out for any winning corner bet. A glimpse at the 8/1 payout makes the bet seem attractive, but when you consider that players have a 1 in 9.25 chance of winning, the casino is creating its own advantage by paying out under the odds.
Another important aspect for players to keep in mind when placing a corner bet is that although they are able to place as many bets as they wish in a single roulette round, players have to keep within the table limits. These limits are in place primarily to protect the casino from heavy losses. So it’s a good idea to check the table rules before placing any large wagers.
