<2>What is Composition Dependent Strategy?
Composition dependent strategy depends on the variables in a typical game of blackjack, whereas total dependent strategy relies on the parameters of the game being exactly as they should be if the game stayed static.
Composition Dependent Strategy Explained
For the seasoned blackjack player, composition dependent strategy is an easy concept to understand. For the novice, however, it is better understood if one first has a full understanding of the total dependent strategy. This is the blackjack player’s typical strategy, based on how the game would play out if the variables – such as the number of players and the deck’s count – did not change.
However, as the game obviously does change as more variables are introduced or these factors are altered, there needed to be an alternative strategy. Thus, the composition dependent strategy was devised. The strategy, by its very nature, shifts and changes as the game of blackjack does.
Composition dependent strategy takes all of the cards on the table into consideration, as opposed to just the score of the two cards in a player’s starting hand. For example, if the player’s hand contains an 8 and a 4, and the hand therefore has a total value of 12, composition dependent strategy would dictate that the player sticks at this point, receiving no more cards from the dealer. However, if the player’s 12-point hand consisted of a 10 and a 2, the player would ask the dealer for another card under the composition dependent strategy.
In this example, the player’s decisions depend on the cards both in their hand and the cards still remaining in the deck. Because the player had a 10 in their hand in the second instance, the player notes that there is one fewer 10 (a very high card) in the pack, which slightly reduces their chance of drawing another 10 and therefore going bust.
However, in the first instance, the player with an 8 and a 4 has a much higher chance of being dealt a 10-point card, because he knows that he is not holding one and that it is, therefore, still in the pack.
Therefore, composition dependent strategy dictates that the player takes all cards and variables into consideration, while the total dependent strategy depends only on the game’s static factors.
