Bust Card

What is Bust Card?

In blackjack, the bust card is the card that takes the player over the limit of their 21-point goal. If a player goes above 21 points in this game, they have bust and are eliminated from the round.

Bust Card Explained

The objective of blackjack is to reach 21 points (or as near to this score as possible) by adding up the numerical value of the cards the player holds in their hand. The player is not allowed to go above this value. However, if they do go above 21, that player is said to have bust, which this is detrimental to their game. For this reason, odds are very important in blackjack.

To begin, each player at the blackjack table receives two cards (facing upwards) from the dealer, and this is their starting hand. It is impossible, at this stage, to become bust. This is because the cards between two and 10 inclusive are taken for their face value, and the Jack, Queen, and King cards are all worth 10 points. The ace can be used as either an 11-point card, or a card worth one point. Therefore, the highest possible starting hand is 21 (achieved with any card worth 10 points and an 11-point ace).

As gameplay progresses, the player can request more cards from the dealer if they have been dealt a low starting hand. For instance, a player could be dealt a two and a four, meaning that their hand is worth six points.

Obviously, this is very far away from their goal of 21 and at this point, they would ask for another card. They may then receive a card worth 10 points from the dealer (either a ten or a picture card). When all three cards are added together, the player has a hand worth 16 points, and is now just five points away from the 21-point goal.

The player can either choose to stick (meaning that they are happy with their score and do not want to risk going above 21 by receiving a high card) or to ask the dealer for another card and hope that it is low.

At this point, if the player is dealt an eight, for example, this eight would be their bust card, as it has carried them over the limit of 21.
