Boule (La Boule)
What is La Boule?
La Boule is an old French casino game which is similar to roulette
. Today, it is rarely seen outside France and not played online. The game is played with a bowl similar to roulette, with several pockets for colours and numbers from 1 to 9. The ball, which is bigger than in roulette and around the size of a tennis ball, is spun in the bowl before landing in one of the pockets, while the bowl itself remains static. Before the game begins, players will have the option to make one of several bets - players can either bet on low (1-4), high (6-9), odd (1, 3, 7, 9), even (2, 4, 6, 8), a specific number, or red or black. For low, high, odd, even, red or black, the payout will be 1/1 and 7/1 for specific numbers. The house edge is increased by the number 5, which is yellow and acts the same as the zero in roulette. The 5 is also not included in bets on odd numbers.
La Boule explained
Although La Boule is similar to roulette, it does have some significant differences. While most of these are aesthetic, such as the size of the ball, the largest difference, other than the terminology, is in the payout
structure. The use of fewer numbers gives a significantly increased house edge
compared to roulette. The betting layout is structured so that the house edge is 11.11% on all bets. This gives it one of the largest house advantages
in all casino games, significantly more than roulette (particularly European Roulette
, as played in French casinos, which only has a single zero on the wheel.) Perhaps for this reason, the game has declined in popularity over the years and is now only usually found in France, parts of Switzerland and occasionally in some Asian countries.
