Bet or Fold

What is ‘Bet or Fold’?

In Texas Hold ‘Em, Check, Bet or Fold are the betting actions the first active player to the left of the dealer can choose from during the flop, the turn, and the river betting rounds.

There are 5 basic betting actions in most Poker games, which are check, call, raise, bet, and fold. Folding is the only option available at any time during the play of a hand. The other 4 options depend on the betting actions of players at the table.

‘Bet or Fold’ Explained

The player starting the pot is considered to be ‘placing a bet.’ It opens the pot to additional wagers. Note that the term ‘bet’ refers to bets placed to open the pot, and nothing else.

The Flop in Texas Hold ‘Em Poker
The first three community cards, known as ‘the flop,’ are dealt facing up on the board. Betting begins again with the first active player to the immediate left of the dealer, who must then decide whether to check, bet, or fold. Poker play continues in a clockwise direction around the table. When all players have acted, the betting round is complete.

The Turn in Texas Hold ‘Em Poker
After the flop hands are played, another card, called the ‘turn card,’ is dealt facing up on the table. Betting begins again with the first active player to the immediate left of the dealer, who must then decide whether to check, bet, or fold. Poker play continues in a clockwise direction around the table. When all players have acted, the betting round is complete. The turn card is also called ‘fourth street.’

The River in Texas Hold ‘Em Poker
After the turn betting round, a final card called ‘the river,’ is dealt facing up on the table. No more cards are dealt. Betting begins again with the first active player to the immediate left of the dealer, who must then decide whether to check, bet, or fold. Poker play continues in a clockwise direction around the table. When all players have acted, the betting round is complete. The river is also known as ‘fifth street.’

The player who checks is opting to stay in the game, without adding to the pot, which is basically a ‘zero’ bet. You can only check if no player before you has wagered, or put money in the pot. Once a bet has been made players can no longer opt to check, and they must call, raise, or fold, respectively.

• Check: Declining one’s option to bet where no other player has bet during the round.
• Bet: Starts the pot to be won in a game.
• Call: To match another players’ bet.
• Raise: A bet that a player makes after another player has already bet, increasing the stakes.
• Fold: To give up your hand, so you are longer participating in the pot.
