What is a ‘Ball Game’?
However, the term ball game can also exclusively be used to refer to Keno games in which the numbers selected are presented by plastic balls.
‘Ball Game’ Explained
The expression ball game is used to describe many games that use small plastic balls to represent numbers. The most common type of ball game played in casinos, both land-based and online, is called a keno game.
These games are set up in much a similar way to bingo. Players place bets by selecting numbers between one and 80. Once all these bets have been made, the players are given slips of paper with grids of numbers on them and 20 numbers are drawn and announced by the caller. These numbers will be randomly selected either using a blower – which is a device that randomly mixes up the numbered balls by using forced air – or a computer-based number generator.
Nowadays, many ball games such as Keno and bingo tend to opt for number selection by using computer-generated, random callout. The days of the blower appear to be disappearing into the past, as they are slower, require more maintenance, and are generally lower-tech.
This game is offered at many casinos across the globe, but each establishment tends to set its own sequence of payouts. These are called pay tables, and the player receives winnings depending on how many of their numbers were selected (either through the player’s own choosing or via the caller’s number selector), the amount of numbers matched, and the bet placed.
Keno games are thought to come with a bigger house edge than that of other games provided by the very same casino, ranging from under 4% to higher than 35%.
