What is Avatar?
In gambling, an avatar is a digital representation of the online player, which represents them in poker rooms or when using gambling software. Avatars might be as simple as an uploaded photograph or graphic, or a complex 3D character made with special software. The icons represent each player in a game and can be personalized to suit each individual. They are used to distinguish between players in an online gaming environment.
In the physical world, a poker player or casino gambler is represented at the table by themselves taking a seat. However, when playing poker and other games online, players need a virtual presence to represent them. An ‘avatar’ is a digital image of the person, or a symbol that represents that person, and it usually appears beside their name in the player list. If that player wins or is involved in an action, their avatar may appear on the screen. It might also appear to indicate which player should take their turn next.
Avatars can be a simple as a picture or photograph of the player, used as a profile picture. Others might prefer to use a picture of a sports team logo, of a favorite pet, or of some amusing or attractive image they feel represents them. As well as these 2D avatars, some software allows for the creation of special 3D avatar characters. More commonly seen in video gaming, avatar characters are becoming more popular in online casino environments. These are usually digitally generated cartoon characters, and the player can customize aspects like facial features, size, color, hairstyles and clothing to suit their own tastes.
While avatars are just a fun way to tell players apart online, there are schools of poker psychology which suggest you can learn a lot from a person’s avatar, and that their chosen icon reveals a lot about their play style. Some players use the images chosen by opponents to make decisions about their own play, and will deliberately select misleading avatars themselves to avoid giving any information away.
