What is ‘Automatic’?
Automatic is a situation in poker where the next move is obvious or a must-bet situation.
When you play in poker tournaments – whether it is online or live in casinos – the best way for success is to play the percentages and the numbers. When you do that you will find a number of positions where your decision becomes obvious or automatic.
The most frequent of those will be when you are short stacked. The shorter your stack, the quicker you have to push all your chips in, so you probably won’t even need to see a decent hand in your hole cards. Any two suited cards, any picture with a half decent kicker and certainly any Ace is likely to see you shove all your chips into the pot. You won’t even need to think about it. It will be automatic – it is obviously the only thing to do.
Another example would be if you flip things around and the same thing could happen. You are yet to act, but someone with a short stack before you has gone all-in. Their stack is so small that it isn’t going to cost you too many chips to see if you can beat that player and get rid of them. With the blinds and possible antes on top, the call becomes automatic.
The best position to be in is when you are sat with the nuts after the turn and the river. Someone bets into you and the raise is automatic because you can’t possibly lose the hand at that point. You know it is automatic and are probably raising before the initial bet has been fully struck.
Whether the situation is a good one or a struggling one, there are times in any poker game when you don’t even need to think about your next move. It is automatic.
