Shock as two thirds of Brits back Jeremy Corbyn to be the next UK prime minister

  • 64% of bets placed at four of Britain’s biggest bookmakers back Jeremy Corbyn to become Prime Minister
  • 44% of punters are also betting on a Labour majority
  • Analysis of betting patterns by Casinopedia reveals that just one in five Brits is betting on a Conservative majority

After Brexit and Trump, two thirds of Brits (64%) are betting on another electoral earthquake: Jeremy Corbyn to be holding the keys to 10 Downing Street after the June 8 UK general election.

Casinopedia has analysed the betting patterns – and the odds being offered – on the UK’s general election, and found that a clear majority of punters are defying the opinion polls and backing Corbyn to win.

The analysis* of all bets placed through four major online and high street bookmakers — Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Bet and Betfred — also revealed:

Just 15% are backing Theresa May to win on 8 June
Only one in five (21%) are betting on a Conservative majority
Nearly half of punters (44%) are staking their money on a Labour majority
A third expect neither Labour nor the Conservatives to have a majority

Staggeringly, the Casinopedia analysis revealed that nine in ten (87%) bets on the next Prime Minister at Paddy Power have gone on Corbyn, while three quarters (75%) of the bets on a majority win at Sky Bet have favoured Labour.

Jake Fox, CEO of Casinopedia, said: “The past year has delivered some seismic political shocks and many Brits are clearly betting on another one next month. While the opinion polls scream Labour whitewash, up and down the land people are putting real money on an electoral redwash.

“The polls and perhaps common sense suggest that Brits are barking mad but for many people a small bet on an outrageous outcome creates a bit of a thrill and adds to the drama. It’s like betting on a 200-1 shot at the Grand National. It’s unlikely to win but just imagine — imagine — if it did.

“Jeremy Corbyn has been written off many times, but he remains in it to win it. Our research shows many Britons are putting their money where his mouth is, by backing him to pull off the upset to end all upsets.”
