- Study into winning lottery numbers lists the most commonly drawn winners
- Most common number is 16, but players will still need a little lady luck
What’s in a number? Quite a lot when it comes to picking your lottery tickets. That’s the results of a study into the world’s most successful lottery numbers.
According to research by jackpot.com into the numbers drawn in lotteries around the world in the last 12 months, the most common number is 16. Place that on your lottery ticket, bingo or keno card then if you want to become a winner.
Of course, a lottery can’t be won with one number alone, so you’ll need to add a few more lucky numbers onto that slip. Those numbers should include 22, 28, 37, 6 and 3. What’s so special about these digits? Well, each of them was drawn over 160 times in the past year at various lotteries.
The world’s luckiest number?
There’s no disputing the accuracy of the study and so there’s no reason to disbelieve that 16 is officially the world’s luckiest number. Having been drawn 191 times in the past 12 months, its track record speaks for itself.
It’s worth noting however that numbers are never going to be drawn in an equal fashion. There’s bound to be some numbers that are drawn more commonly than others. In fact, it would be stranger if all one and two-digit numbers were drawn at broadly the same rate than it would be for there to be a handful that are picked unusually often. The popularity of 16, 22 and its ilk should come as no surprise then.
Nevertheless, don’t let that detract from the fact that, statistically speaking, a lottery ticket with those numbers on stands a greater chance of success.
You still need lady luck
Then again, previous performance should not be taken as an indication of future success. If it were as simple as selecting a handful of frequently recurring numbers, the whole world would be doing it and the whole world would be winning. To win that lottery draw or complete that bingo card, you’ll still need a slice of luck, and the last time anyone conducted a study into the matter, luck remains an elusive attribute that can’t be bought, borrowed or learned.
Incidentally, if your birthday’s on the 18th and thus you’re prone to making it one of your lottery numbers, you might want to have a rethink. It was drawn just four times in the past year, making it the world’s unluckiest number, closely followed by 46, 40, 41, 32 and 36. What’s in a number? As much or as little as you choose to make of it.
