- Third quarter revenues up 37.3% across online gaming sector
- Slot games produce more than half of online casino profit
Spain’s online gaming profits are increasingly steadily, third quarter figures from the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego have revealed.
This is largely due to the introduction in 2001 of the Spanish Gambling Act, which nationalized gambling regulation and opened the door for online sports betting.
In 2015, this Act was extended to cover the regulation of slots, and this slot market in particular has gone from strength to strength since then.
Revenue across all games improves
Slot games accounted for 50.9% of all online casino game profit, bringing in € 22.3 million over the last three months. Live roulette is also very popular in Spain right now, producing € 9.1 million between July and September.
Sports betting online is still a huge industry, and it created a € 77 million turnover during this third quarter. This is a 37% improvement on 2016, and shows the large appetite for online gaming and betting in Spain.
The online bingo sector remains small, bringing in just € 2.9 million. However, this gaming segment has seen a dramatic rise in popularity over the past year. The reported profits for this game in 2017 improved 30% year on year, according to the DGOJ figures.
Spanish regulators launch safety policy
The DGOJ is working closely with Jdigital, a gambling compliance regulator for the commercial industry, to tighten up responsible gaming standards across the online casino sector. The JuegoESresponsable platform will highlight best practices through its Responsible Commitments for Online Gambling program.
The aim of the scheme is to promote transparency and fairness within the industry, and to ensure that operators and players have access to resources that encourage safer play.
Regulators have praised the new platform and offered their support for it “In the DGOJ we share the commitment to responsible gambling policy from the perspective of public health and the fight against fraud,” said Deputy Director of Gambling Inspection Cecilia Pastor.
