The face-off between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin before Saturday’s fight.

Forget the procession that was Mayweather vs McGregor – this could be the most thrilling middleweight contest in decades.

Golovkin, who holds the IBF and WBA belts, is eight years older than his opponent and has successfully defended his crown in 18 successive fights.

A victory on Saturday would take him to just one behind the middleweight record 20 held by Bernard Hopkins.

But he faces a tough opponent in Alvarez, who won the WBC title in 2015 and has not lost a fight since going down to a majority points decision against Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

The contest promises to be a fascinating one, and even the styles of the two fighters seem to complement one another, with Golovkin favouring an aggressive attacking approach and Alvarez preferring to sit back and hit on the counter.

Golovkin the favorite

The fight will be broadcast on pay-per-view Box Nation Box Office in the UK and Ireland and HBO Inside Boxing in the US, and has already captured the imagination among boxing fans and punters on both sides of the Atlantic.

At this stage, Golovkin is the clear favorite and is priced up around +110 with US sportsbooks while Alvarez is around +700.

UK bookmakers are also giving the edge to the Kazakhstani with Betway offering a competitive price of 8-13 about a Golovkin victory, while Alvarez can generally be backed at 5-4, although bwin is offering 7-5.

And it seems that bookmakers are split over how long the fight will last, with many making it a 5-6 shot that it will go the distance and 11-10 that it will be over inside twelve rounds, while Unibet is offering odds of 10-1 that both fighters will be knocked down.
