WATCH: New Netflix gambling movie ‘Win It All’ debuts its trailer

  • New Girl’s Jake Johnson heads up the cast as gambler Eddie Garrett
  • The film is set to arrive on Netflix on April 7

Joe Swanberg, the director of Drinking Buddies, has made underground gambling the focus of his latest film which stars New Girl’s Jake Johnson.

Watch a trailer for the movie below:

Win It All, set in Chicago, sees Johnson plays a small-time gambler named Eddie Garrett who gets by working in car parks before Cubs games. When night falls, however, Eddie heads to Chinatown to partake in some underground gambling. Eddie just has one problem: he’s a terrible card player.

High stakes

With Eddie borrowing money to gamble from a less than above board looking duffle bag, every cent he loses at the card table he’s going to have to recover. The raised tension signifies a departure from typical Swanberg pictures, with titles such as ‘Drinking Buddies’, ‘Digging for Fire’ and ‘Happy Endings’ all measuring relatively low on the suspense meter. There are however seemingly plenty of laughs to still be had, with Eddie constantly battling against his own misfortune and ineptitude as he desperately tries to dig himself out of the hole he’s created.

Heading to Netflix

Swanberg has been doing some pretty interesting work on Netflix of late, his series ‘Easy’, which follows the lives of several friends in Chicago, earned him a lot of plaudits, so it should come as no surprise that ‘Win it All’ is also set to debut on the streaming service. Netflix has become a viable outlet for smaller budget films looking to secure an audience they wouldn’t necessarily get with a theatrical release in recent years, and with Swanberg continuing to take advantage of what Netflix has to offer, it won’t be long before other filmmakers follow suit.

So far, so good

So far the word on ‘Win It All’ has been largely positive with the film generating a positive response from festival goers and critics alike at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Everyone else will get to judge it for themselves on April 7 when the film debuts on Netflix.
