- The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma has become the first to gain such a license
- Tribe will reportedly operate an online poker site
The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma has achieved a historic first after securing an Isle of Man gaming licence. It’s the first time that a Native American tribe has achieved an international online gaming license.
License of online operation
Although the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma have technically just crossed the Atlantic to obtain their latest license, it’s one which grants them permission to operate on the web. As a consequence, they won’t be establishing a visible bricks and mortar presence in the gaming-friendly Isle of Man any time soon.
The tribe has reportedly been working on securing an online gaming licence for over two years. To help the tribe achieve its objective, it set up a company called Ioway Internet Gaming Enterprise Limited on the Isle of Man tasked with obtaining the necessary regulatory permission.
Having finally done so, the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma can now proceed with operating an reported online poker site from its HQ in Perkins, Oklahoma.
Proud to be first
To reach this stage, the tribe has had to obtain legal approval, which it did after taking its case to a federal district court in Oklahoma City in April of last year. Once an arbitrator ruled in the tribe’s favour, permitting them to offer online gambling, the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma pressed ahead with seeking a suitable regulator to obtain a licence from.
“The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma is proud to be the first Native American tribe to secure an international online gaming license,” said tribe chairman Bobbo Walkup. “The process has taken longer than we may have envisioned when we began this journey, but, because we are a Native American tribe and held to higher gaming legal and regulatory standards, we had to ensure that we met all these standards.”
The Iowa tribe has little time for celebrating however, for already it is alleged to be developing plans to obtain other gaming licences in separate jurisdictions in the future. Its Isle of Man-licensed poker site, meanwhile, is scheduled to go live later this year.
