- The Spartan Poker is one of a number of recent poker startups growing rapidly in India
- Move comes as companies push for poker to be recognised as a game of skill
Popular MTV presenter Rannvijay Singh will become the main brand ambassador for The Spartan Poker, India’s leading poker website.
Singh, who is perhaps most well-known for presenting Roadies on MTV India, will be the new face of the company as they plan to expand their operations throughout India.
A game of skill?
Poker is becoming increasingly popular in India, as while many states in the country have legislation against gambling, there are exemptions for ‘games of skill.’ That means that poker meets the criteria in many places, and the recruitment of Singh is likely another move to help increase the legitimacy and legality of the game in India.
In fact, Singh himself mentioned the skill-based nature of the game when announced as the new ambassador, saying: “It is exciting to be associated as the first brand ambassador of The Spartan Poker, an online poker brand that has fast become one of the most sought after destinations on the internet to play poker. Having used the portal myself, I have come to realize that poker is a skill based game, and while physical fitness is important, mental fitness is equally important too. It’s a thinking game that puts your mind to task, and has hence proved to be a wonderful tool through which everyone can build and enhance their analytical and logical skill sets.”
An intellectual game
Amin Rozani, MD and co-founder of The Spartan Poker said: “Poker is a game of skills and mind boggling challenges, Rannvijay not only understands the game properly but also abides by the rules of the game. He is an excellent poker player. As a youth icon who is so bold and canny, I think Rannvijay is a perfect fit for The Spartan Poker to make people aware of poker as an intellectual game, sport and not just gambling.”
The Spartan Poker was founded in 2014 in India, and has experienced rapid growth along with a number of other similar start-ups in the country as the game continues to receive legitimacy and popularity.
