Microgaming set to crown the Greatest Poker Player in the Universe

  • Microgaming Poker Network’s tournament sees small buy-ins and guaranteed €750,000
  • 59 events and range of prizes aimed at bringing in large amount of players
  • Microgaming follows trend by offering additional incentives for those who stream their play on social media

From September 10 to 24 the centre of the Poker Universe is going to be the Isle of Man based Microgaming Poker Network (MPN), which will be running the Universal Championship of Poker III (UCOP III).

Microgaming Poker Network is set to crown The Greatest Poker Player of All Time. Apparently.

Events have staggered starts between across the evenings and a range of buy-ins from €5+€0.50 to a €300+€20 buy-in Main Event.

In total MPN will be cramming 59 events into the fortnight of online thrills.

There are guaranteed prizes totalling €750,000 across the 59 events and to encourage playing the full gamut of events MPN has said: “There are hundreds of world champions from many different countries. Some were made in the real world – in Las Vegas, Monte Carlo or Macau.

“More recently, world champions have been made online. But only the MPN can crown you The Greatest Poker Player in the Universe.”

Become The Greatest Player In The Universe

To win that title you need to top out the UCOP III leaderboard. There will not only be the highfalutin title for whoever manages the most points, but also a €5,000 prize.

The rest of the top twenty on the leaderboard won’t go away empty handed either (notwithstanding their tournament cashes) as there will be a series of leaderboard prizes from €2,000 for whoever comes second in the Greatest Player race down to €20 for 16th-20th.

Players will win points to the Greatest Player in the Universe leaderboard by cashing in events.

A social media sensation

However, to encourage the viral spread of the event players there is a second leaderboard MPN are calling the ‘Great Players Leaderboard’, in which points are earned by streaming your play on Twitch, Facebook or YouTube.

100 points are rewarded for every event streamed and 250 for the ‘most interesting’ stream each day, with an extra 50 points if you stream from a final table.

Ostensibly these streaming points are to reward players who ‘don’t just play poker‘.

That it generates publicity for MPN and the Championship is likely just a secondary benefit. If it works it could be a big PR coup, and the motivation is there for the players with €2,000 in place for the person who tops out the streaming leaderboard.

It will be interesting to see what effect the bombast and mass streaming will have on the status of MPN and the UCOP III.

If all goes well it might help boost awareness of online poker in Europe at a key time.
