- MGM Resorts International planning to open gaming websites in New Jersey
- Company also looking to introduce online gambling in Massachusetts
MGM Resorts International is planning to set up an online casino and poker site in New Jersey. The new online gaming sites are expected to operate under Borgata’s license, but it is unclear whether the new ventures will be run on GVC software.
Senior vice president of business development at MGM Resorts, Tom Mikulich said: “There have been a lot of rumors but I can tell you that we are indeed interested in the online opportunities out east and are hopeful to launch our MGM Resorts brand out there in the near future. There is not a specific timeline but if it comes to fruition, it likely would be for both poker and casino games.”
Borgata’s roster of sites increases to six
The move would increase the stable of online gaming sites which use Borgata’s interactive gaming license up to six – BorgataCasino, BorgataPoker, PartyPoker, PalaCasino, PalaBingoUSA, and MGM. Up until last year, MGM shared joint ownership of Borgata with Boyd Gaming, but in August 2016 it purchased Boyd’s 50% stake.
MGM set to assume position as online leader
The promise of MGM assuming a more significant role in the US online gaming industry could be coming to fruition with its New Jersey plans – the company has been one of the most outspoken advocates for legalized online gambling in the US to date.
MGM’s expansion further into online gaming comes after a vote four months ago, which saw New Jersey voters defeat a ballot referendum proposing the extension of gambling from Atlantic City to northern areas of the state.
Massachusetts also part of MGM’s online plans
MGM is also supporting the introduction of online gambling to Massachusetts with Vice President & General Counsel for MGM Springfield Seth Stratton saying “When you already have licensed gaming companies who are top operators in the state it just makes sense to have those who have already been vetted and have gone through the process have that opportunity.”
