Jennifer Lawrence in glitzy casino premiere for Mother! which may go up against poker thriller Molly’s Game in awards season

  • Aronofsky thriller features Lawrence as disturbed mother ‘Grace’
  • Premiere hosted in Venice at Sala Grande casino complex

Stars of the silver screen flocked to Venice last week for the 74th Venice Film Festival, hosted this year at the Sala Grande luxury resort and casino, close to Venice’s famous Grand Canal.

The casino venue screened new movie Mother!, hotly tipped for success at the Oscars, and the film’s star Jennifer Lawrence was among those who walked the red carpet. Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller received a positive reception from the audience and from critics, and is due for general release later this month.

Dark, gritty thriller pushes boundaries of filmmaking

Mother! has been called “the most ambitious film to come out of a major studio since Kubrick died” by reviewers at Filmink, and the film has racked up an impressive 77% score on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

“It’s a psychological freak-out,” warned director Darren Aronofsky. “You shouldn’t over-explain it.”

While the innovative thriller is certainly going to be one of the most talked about movies as we enter 2018, it will be interesting to see how it plays with the typical Oscars crowd.

That said, the film went down well at its September 5 screening in Venice, and moviegoers are looking forward to it hitting cinemas on September 15.

Sala Casino welcomes stars

Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet
The Sala Grande complex includes the extravagant Lido Casino a luxury venue favored by visiting VIPs and local businessman. The theater at the venue has been recently renovated to ensure the venue suits its celebrity clientele, many of whom are reported to have stayed at the nearby Palazzo hotels and spent time at the tables in the Lido casino.

Oscars’ darling Lawrence tipped for big win

Jennifer Lawrence is already being tipped as a likely Oscar winner for her role in Mother!, and the 27-year-old Hunger Games star is a popular nomination choice for the annual awards ceremony.

She received a nomination for her role in Joy, despite the film garnering no other notable awards, and she was a winner in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook. In the past seven years, Lawrence has been nominated for four Oscars and four Golden Globe awards – winning three of the latter and one of the former.

She joins other leading likely nominees who are predicted for wins by online sources, including some veterans of the industry such as Meryl Streep, Judi Dench and Jane Fonda.

Michelle Williams has played two key roles this year, in All The Money In The World and The Greatest Showman’, raising the chance that she will take 2018’s Best Actress prize.

Many bookmakers will be offering the latest odds on a win, once the nominations are officially announced on January 23, 2018.

Jessica Chastain also in running for poker film performance

Some insider sources are placing Jessica Chastain in the leading picks for Best Actress next year, after she was selected to portray ‘Princess of Poker’ Molly Bloom in an upcoming biopic.

Chastain stars as Bloom in Molly’s Game, a true account of how Bloom was convicted of racketeering during her reign as manager and organizer of an exclusive poker ring for celebrities, executives and VIPs.

Chastain is no stranger to the Oscars, with previous nominations for Zero Dark Thirty (Best Actress) and The Help (Best Supporting Actress).

Those looking to take a punt on the outcome of the ceremony might well consider this poker thriller star, who could claim a victory over Lawrence in the top female category.
