- Italian football club gambles on betting deal with Bwin
- Bookmaker to have presence at San Siro stadium
Italian soccer giants FC Internazionale, known internationally as Inter Milan, has signed a deal with online betting firm Bwin which will run until 2020.
This is the first time the club has linked with a betting firm, and is one of several changes being made under the new ownership team at Inter.
Bwin continues sports expansion
Bwin is a subsidiary of casino and betting giants GVC Holdings, who purchased the brand in 2016.
The group is associated with a number of top sports teams, including an active link with Bayern Munich and a previous partnership with Real Madrid.
Linking betting services with sports teams is extremely common, but Internazionale have never joined the trend.
Former owner Massimo Moratti expressed strong anti-gambling sentiments and turned down offers of sponsorship from interested parties. However, the club was sold to Nusantara Sports Ventures HK Limited in 2016 – and the new owners have made themselves open to offers from betting companies. Bwin, on the expansion itself in the sports sector, was happy to seize the opportunity.
On-site betting and services for fans
As part of the deal with Bwin, fans visiting the San Siro stadium will get exclusive in-play odds for games, displayed on big screens in the ground, which they can place on their mobiles while they watch.
The betting company will also be promoted through the club’s social media, and their branding will be included in programs and promotional materials. In return, Inter will receive an undisclosed sum per year from Bwin.
