The concept behind Escalator is that throughout the eight days of No Limit Hold’em competition, the stack sizes and level lengths get deeper, culminating in a final-day ‘Main Event’ that costs $341 (€320) to enter, with 10,000 starting chips and a $79,986 (€75,000) guaranteed prize pool for the Main Event alone.

With 29 different events across the eight days, there is something for poker players of all levels. From full ring to 6-max games, as well as rebuy tournaments, the MPN is viewing Escalator as a great opportunity to broaden the appeal of its network.

“The MPN is focused on growing tournaments in 2017, and building on the success of the thrilling tournament series we ran in 2016. Escalator is the newest addition to our portfolio, and I’m sure that players are going to love the variety and excitement that’s on offer throughout.”

Satellites up and running for escalator

Satellites for the Escalator series have already begun, with the ability to qualify for some of the featured events for as little as 22 cents. The MPN is also planning to reward players who register for at least 10 Escalator tournaments by April 15 with a free ticket to a Main Event ‘Mega Satellite’, giving them a one-off shot at qualifying for the $79,986 Main Event on April 16.

The MPN hopes that, over time, Escalator will become a mainstay in its tournament series line-up, alongside favourites such as the Festival of Speed and the flagship Universal Championship of Poker.

OUR VERDICT

There’s nothing like a tournament to get the blood pumping, particularly one on the scale of Microgaming’s Escalator competition. Of course, when it comes to poker it’s fair to say that players are spoilt for choice throughout the year as the world’s biggest and best pit their wits against each other. But, where the real value lies in competitions such as Escalator is in its accessibility. Yes, you have the big bucks events – step up to these tables if you dare – but you also have things like the flip tournament, which is the perfect environment for amateurs. It means that all players, regardless of skill or bankroll can soak the atmosphere of tournament poker. And that’s what playing should be about.
