- Kensington-based casino has a £40 million price tag
- Malaysian casino giant has owned the business for over a decade
Malaysian casino giant Genting has put its exclusive Kensington casino Maxims up for sale for a price of at least £40 million.
Genting has run the site for more than a decade, but it is reported that the company has brought in property consultancy CBRE to handle the sale of the casino, which is housed within Victorian townhouse Palace Gate House – a building constructed in the 1860s for friend and biographer of Charles Dickens, John Forster.
Based in the prestigious London borough of Kensington, the land-based casino, which has recently been refurbished, is one of the most popular establishments in the capital and is known for its intimate atmosphere, with tables spread throughout Grade II Listed building, rather than the traditional open floor space of regular casinos.
The casino offers a range of 26 table games, including roulette, craps, blackjack and few more specialist options such as chemin de fer, craps, European roulette and baccarat, and nine stud poker tables, although the site includes no slots games, which may have made it less competitive in the modern casino market.
The casino’s Kensington location also helped to set it apart from the majority of the capital’s more exclusive casinos, most of which are based in the centre of Mayfair.
According to some reports, this location issue may have caused Maxims to lose some business in recent years, contributing towards Genting’s decision to sell.
The news that Maxims will be up for sale does not come as a complete surprise to industry outsiders. In response to press enquires earlier this year, the company had indicated in a statement that it may be prepared to listen to offers on the property:
“Genting owns a number of properties around the UK, including in attractive London locations, and we are frequently approached by interested parties. In certain cases, we are open to sensible conversations about these opportunities.”
Genting is one of the UK’s largest leisure interests and currently holds the licences for 42 UK-based casino facilities.
