- Could Amazon be the latest to embrace the rise and rise of cryptocurrency
- Petition on Change.org to target Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos
The way people play at online casinos is set for a major sea-change amid the Bitcoin phenomenon that has prompted a new digital gold rush.
Casino games have been revolutionised by the internet, and is set to be turned on its head once again by the rise and rise of the so-called cryptocurrency.
2017 has already been a record-breaking year for Bitcoin with its value tripling since January.
At the start of the year one bitcoin would have set you back a little over £600. At its peak on June 6 the price was £2,225.
The casino industry has always been quick to jump on new technology and trends, and Bitcoin is no exception and an Amazon customer has started a petition aimed at CEO Jeff Bezos to get the online shopping giant to start accepting cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin as payment.
People show support via Change.org
Eilrahc Issatoshi started the petition on Change.org and has set a goal of 5000 signatures, so far proving very successful with just over 1000 signatures needed to reach the goal at the time of writing.
The petition read: “Amazon should show continued leadership in innovation by eagerly accepting two of the most trusted and proven cryptocurrencies in existence: Bitcoin and Litecoin.
“Acceptance and intelligent integration of these efficient and groundbreaking payment methods will lead to more streamlined commerce and an improvement in the purchasing experience for the many millions who shop Amazon.
“This logical expansion in the payment options for Amazon’s customers would help to proactively modernize the purchasing process and ultimately improve quality of life by bringing together the most efficient distribution systems with the most efficient and convenient payment systems available.”
Amazon hasn’t yet shown any signs that it plans to start accepting digital currency on the site however the petition has also received support on popular sites like Reddit.
The popularity of cryptocurrencies
There have been examples recently of cryptocurrencies being permitted as acceptable payment methods. In Japan they can now be legally used in both retail shops and also for airline and hotel bookings.
Bitcoin has recently experienced a huge jump in value, increasing 159%, from just over $1,000 to $2,700 Since March 23. However, the online currencies are known for their unreliability and often fluctuations in price.
On Wednesday, Ethereum, another digital currency, crashed in a matter of minutes which threw further doubt over whether more companies should start accepting them as payments.
The future of cryptocurrencies remains unclear, however the desire from many customers for more retailers to start accepting them as a form of payment continues to increase and certainly more companies may start to listen to the demands of purchasers.
