- Football Association has cut ties with gambling companies
- Coral will maintain a presence at the Riverside Stadium
UK bookmaker Coral Casino has announced that its contract with Middlesbrough Football Club will run for a further three years, after both parties agreed to extend their current partnership.
The news comes just weeks after the Football Association declared it was ending all relationships with gambling companies, including its Ladbrokes Casino sponsorship deal which brought in £4 million annually.
The club deal includes advertising at matches, giving Coral chance to promote its new online casino application which launched on Android earlier this month.
Strong relationship between football and betting
Coral is one of nine gambling companies with links to Premier League or Championship clubs. These include Dafabet (Burnley FC), bet365 (Stoke City) and Fun88 (Newcastle United).
Coral has maintained a presence at the Riverside Stadium for several years, and will continue to operate on site under the new three-year contract. Players who bet and win at the match can cash in their winnings at any Coral outlet.
However, the FA has raised concerns about the influence of gambling on football, and is seeking to reduce involvement by bookmakers. In addition to ending its own relationship with bookmaker Ladbrokes, the authority has been heavy-handed in tackling gambling by players.
A Premier League player was suspended from the game in April after he was found to be placing bets on matches.
Meanwhile in the National League, Sutton United had to fire their goalkeeper over allegations that he interfered with the game by influencing a bet result, a saga which was dubbed piegate.
While the authorities are getting strict about gambling, clubs themselves seem far less concerned.
Big opportunities for Coral as new app launches
Part of the Middlesbrough deal includes advertising for the Coral brand across the club’s website, at games and with adverts on team programs. This means Coral is perfectly placed to promote its new Android app for online casino play.
The new application gives mobile users access to the Coral range of online casino games, which have only been available for iOS and browser play until now.
The change comes as Google removed its block on gambling apps in the Play Store, allowing Android users to enjoy their favorite casinos games on the go.
Coral is one of the first to take advantage, along with 888 Casino.
