- New UK casino site set to open in Spring 2018
- Century Casinos, Inc. has agreed initial $766,000 deal
A new casino under construction in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath, UK, moved a step closer to receiving an official opening date today when Century Casinos, Inc. confirmed its takeover of the project.
The £19m ($24m) casino project was first announced in 2012, and building work began earlier this year. Following the announcement of a provisional opening time earlier this year, it has now been revealed that Century Casinos will be taking on the 30-year site lease and operating the venue.
Details revealed for casino project
The casino site at Saw Close is being handled by development team Deeley Freed Estates Ltd. The design team confirmed plans for a 147-room hotel, luxury entertainment complex and multi-floor casino on the site. The casino site will offer the usual selection of games, including a slots hall, poker and blackjack tables, roulette and craps tables and electronic table games.
Global Gaming Ventures, which is opening a brand new casino in Leeds later this month, were originally linked to the project.
But news was released today of the finalized deal by Century Casinos Europe to acquire the site. The purchase cost plus associated debt is valued at close to £1m ($1.25 million), with the company committing to a further £5 million ($6.3 million) in investment during the 30 year lease term. The deal will be finalized if the company receives the relevant licenses and permits from the UK Gambling Commission, and pending final approval from local authorities.
Jobs and economy boost for Bath
Bath is known for attracting tourists and it is marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It holds a great deal of historic significance, known for the Roman baths which gave the city its name. Coupled with its iconic crescents of houses, the city is dedicated to its past.
A casino complex is therefore a controversial proposal. However, the plans for the new casino project have been well-received, as the site is part of the Saw Close and Kingsmead Square areas – primed for urban renewal and economic regeneration.
The casino has already been praised for providing opportunities to local youngsters, with construction staff welcoming work experience students. Local student Morwenna Harrington picked up an award for her efforts on the construction site and she has secured an apprenticeship as a result. It is hoped that the new casino will give a significant boost to employment in the region, and also encourage more entertainment businesses to set up in the Saw Close region.
