Mega million lottery wins? No thanks, we’re British – survey claims UK prefers smaller prizes

  • Majority of respondents would be satisfied with a £500,000 win
  • One in five would settle for a prize of £20,000
  • Men and older age groups want the biggest wins

A new UK survey of lottery customers has revealed that most UK players are not interested in landing a big jackpot and would be happy with a mere £500,000 ($660,000) win, while twenty percent of players would be satisfied to win just £20,000 ($26,000).

Many UK lottery players value the smaller wins to mega million payouts to help pay off the mortgage or put a deposit on a house.
Many UK lottery players value the smaller wins to mega million payouts to help pay off the mortgage or put a deposit on a house.

The findings come from a survey conducted by global digital lottery platform Lottoz.co.uk.

Two thousand respondents answered questions on lottery prizes, and the results paint a revealing picture of the priorities of UK lottery players. Rather than private jets, yachts and ostentatious lifestyle, most UK players are hoping to win enough to pay off their mortgage, go on a holiday or buy a car.

Some even said they would spend their lottery win on a divorce!

Among the other results uncovered by the survey are the fact that UK men are more likely to be looking for a £1 million jackpot than women and a greater proportion of 25-34 year olds would be satisfied with a £20k prize when compared to over-55s.

The common lotteries available to UK players are run by the National Lottery.

Realistic ambitions

While winning the lottery is often associated with luxury lifestyles, the survey discovered that most UK players have more realistic ambitions.

Sixty-one percent of UK players would be satisfied with a £500,000 win and the list of most popular items to spend a jackpot win on is topped by buying a new home, taking the family on holiday and giving money to close friends and family.

Giving the home a makeover and giving money to charity also make the top ten.

When it comes to the difference between the genders, 29% of men in the survey said they’d want to win £1 million or more, whereas 83% of women would be happy to win less than £1 million.

The survey also showed that 25-34 year olds would opt to spend a lottery win on putting down a deposit for their first home, travelling or getting married.
