Casino Royale has topped an live online poll to find the internet’s favourite Bond film.

The 2006 film, which marked Daniel Craig’s debut as 007, has emerged as the best of the bunch in a list of 23 Bond films ranked by online voting site Ranker.

The film’s set-piece is based around a high-stakes game of Texas Hold’em at the eponymous casino in Montenegro, in which Bond scoops a $115 million pot with a straight flush, having previously taken time away from the poker table to strangle an African warlord, inject himself with an antidote, and restart his heart with a defibrillator.

Craig’s version of Casino Royale was received more warmly by critics than the previous attempt to bring Ian Fleming’s 1954 novel to the screen.

Starring the quintessentially English actor David Niven, the 1967 Casino Royale was conceived as a satire and starred Peter Sellers, Orson Welles and Woody Allen, but does not feature in the Ranker list.

Invisible car

With just under 1,000 votes received, the top three also features one of Craig’s other Bond outings – the 2012 film Skyfall. It isn’t clear whether the dominance of these recent films is down to their excellence or to the fact that fans of older Bonds Sean Connery and Roger Moore being less active on the internet.

That said, Connery’s 1964 outing, Goldfinger, which also starred Honor Blackman, is second on the list, while Roger Moore’s best effort is The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) which ranks sixth behind Connery’s From Russia With Love (1963) and Pierce Brosnan’s Golden Eye (1995).

But there’s bad news for Craig at the other end of the list. His second Bond film, A Quantam Of Solace (2008), is currently propping up the list, just behind Die Another Day (2002) which featured Brosnan, Halle Berry and an invisible car – a film which was widely panned.
