- Casino given thumbs up by City Council
Plans for an all-night casino at Chelmsford City racecourse has been given the green light by Chelmsford City Council.
The casino was given the thumbs up by Chelmsford City Council back in January, with the casino set the be housed in a new five-floor grandstand building at Chelmsford City Racecourse, creating the UK’s first ‘racino.’
Plans for the casino show that it will feature a bar and will sit on one of the five floors, offering players a vast range of slots and table games.
The project is expected to bring more than 100 jobs to the area according to Betfred, who own a majority stake in the racecourse.
Major new state of the art equine facilities and a new turf course on the inside of the existing all-weather surface are also included in the plans; plus a new sports betting hall and fitness centre.
In a statement, Joe Scanlon, Racecourse Chairman, said: “This is fantastic news. Over the course of the last few years, the leading casinos across the world have been changing into multi-purpose complexes offering a full range of leisure facilities to complement their gambling options.
“We will be the first to offer a fully integrated racecourse ‘resort’ or leisure destination with entertainment.”
Joe Scanlon, Chelmsford Racecourse Chairman
“In a very short time, we expect to become the leading leisure offer in this region, providing high class entertainment and facilities to meet all tastes.”
Worked on the development started in January 2017 and signals the start of a new ambitious period in Chelmsford racecourse’s history.
